Description:
The HL-1Kfx was one of first THP Solid State HF amplifier. At the time it was the lightest 500W – 160m-10m HF amplifier on the market with a total weight of only 30.8 Lbs! This amplifier was designed for the traveling operator such as,
DXpeditions, vacations, field day, camping, and for persons who simply want a light weight all in one amplifier.
The 1Kfx came in two design types, the first one was a very limited production run that looked different from the final version. The built in non regulated Linear power supply had taps for different voltages. It was designed so that it could be stored in a carry-on case and could easily fit in an overhead compartment
on an airliner.
The amplifier incorporates four MRF-150 RF Fets which is one of the most common and easy to find fets used in the amplifier industry. The 1Kfx produces a FET drain voltage of 53v and uses a maximum drain current of 25 Amps. Resulting in an output power of 500W Max SSB PEP, 500W CW
and 250W RTTY on HF. The HL-1Kfx was the building block for the HL-1.1kfx which used a switching power suppply to lighten the weight and also incorporated the newer SD2933 Mosfets and more advanced fault detection circuitry. The physical size of the amplifiers is almost identical but the power was increased to 600w and about 8lbs of weight was removed in the 1.1kfx design.
The 1kfx amplifiers broadband tuning characteristics require no further tuning once the proper band has been selected. The HL- 1Kfx utilizes manual band switching; the operator must select the proper band with every band change.
The unique air cooling duct design incorporates an efficient powerful blower fan which supplies cooling to the Aluminum Block heat sink located atop the Power Amplifier module. The fan also supplies cooling to the other internal components
of the amplifier. Its quiet operation allows for even the weakest signals to be heard.
The 1kfx used a PIC proccesor to control the normal functions of the amplifier along with the various high speed protection circuits, which will protect the amplifier from faults
such as Overdrive and High SWR.
There is a front mounted meter. The meter’s function is selectable via the front mounted meter switch. It can display Power Reflected (Pr), Power Forward (Pf), Idle voltage to the MosFets (Vd), and Transmitting Current of the MosFets
(Id). Mount to the right of the meter switch is the manual rotary band switch which the operator would use to select the appropriate band.
There are also numerous LED indicators mounted on the front panel, Power On, High Current (Id). Warning lights include Over Drive, Overheat, Over Volt, Internal Fuse Open, and Excessive Reflective Power.
Rear controls include ALC adjustment control, Transmitter input, Antenna output, PTT keying line (STBY) RCA jack and an ALC Input RCA jack.
